I appreciate the fact that tech support must be an insane and difficult job, but on the other hand being a customer thrown to tech support can be a nightmare. I've experienced this more than once as a webmaster who is not technical guru and often feels like an idiot when confronting tech support.

In my experiences I normally do ask the right questions but receive a multitude of answers without any one person owning the problem. That's because tech support is usually a maze of people with varying levels of expertise and you have to work your way into the system until you find that one knowledgable person who knows what they're doing. All of the other techs won't say "I don't know" but give you useless options just to get rid of you. As someone who has done customer service in the past including some tech support I know it is the noisy bastard who gets the attention and gets his problems fixed. Quiet consumers are just ignored and told whatever sounds good to get rid of them.
